England goes smoke free from 1st July 2007 !!!
From 1 July 2007, the whole of the United Kingdom will have smokefree legislation in place, making it the biggest jurisdiction in the world (by population) to have legally-enforced protection from secondhand smoke. Virtually all workplaces will be smokefree, which means that all employees in offices, shops, factories, restaurants or pubs will be able to work in a clean, smokefree environment.
Its an excellent initiative.. but like all governments do, they have imposed the rule without taking the necessary actions for the implications its causing.
Every friday its hell to walk on the west-street since all the smokers from the pubs will come outside and stand on the pavement to smoke. You might want to take the bylanes and less noisy pavements as you dont want someone to blow the smoke onto your unsuspecting self.
Of course many pubs have put rubbish bins and ash trays outside.. but take a look at the litter its causing.. pathetic. Its same near my office, as the canteen waitresses come to the pavement outside for a good smoke.. and since theres no bin there, they’ll just chuck their butts (excuse the pun) .
I would have suggested that the govt distribute bins to pub owners and also ask them to identify smoking zones where people can smoke.
Apart from all this,I’m pretty pleased with the UK govt for atleast having the courage to implement this kinda rule. I congratulate them and also the people of UK for accepting the rule without giving too much of a fight. Atleast we can now go into a pub for my favorite beer while my wife fancies herself with some fresh fruit juice.
Back home in India, this would have been met with protest and rallys and morchas and stuff..
And i’m not even talking about the litter(kachra)caused there.. that would be another topic..!
I cant remember when we implemented a rule/law sucessfully last time.. even if it was .. its been a long time.
we have got a long way to go..
